Hello, I'm Greg.

I originally wanted to be a high school teacher, teaching Earth Science. I received my B.A. in Earth Science at Dowling College in December 2009. However, after working 6 years in a public library on long island, I have changed my mind to focus on library and information science. Many people ask me why did i change my mind and my response is simply because i love the job, the environment and the people i work with at the library, so why not go for it.

Since graduating high school in 2005 i have gone back to my high school ever winter to coach the Boy's fencing. My first 3 years i was they assistant coach and for the last 2 years i was the head coach, going on my 3rd season as head coach this coming winter. Fencing is a hobby of mine, i don't consider coaching a job (even though it is) because i enjoy it so much. I even run the team website for the boy's and girl's. I'm also a huge movie fan, so of my favorite movies are: Gone in 60 seconds, the Dark Knight, District 9, Ace Ventura, My Cousin Vinny, Christmas Vacation and many more. I don't have much time to read for fun anymore but i did read a book over the summer called The Suicide Collectors by David Oppegaard. It was an awesome book, i couldn't put it down.

I use Facebook pretty much everyday, i'm not really into putting stuff up on my status relating to what i am doing, i feel that is my business and the world doesn't need to know what i am doing every given moment. When i do use the status bar (or what's on your mind, whatever they want to call it) i usually post funny videos i find on youtube, music videos or something else that sparks my interest. I did make a twitter account last summer and made one post until i realized all it really was is the status bar on facebook, so twitter ended quickly for me. I know of flickr, meebo, youtube, twitter but i never really used them to their full potential or not at all but i know the basics of what they do.

well that's all for now, see you all in class!

Hi, Greg,

Welcome! Personally I think you have made a great choice - the job of librarian has more fun. I am working in Bayside High and everyone says our job is the best, well, I say to him/her - "then, go ahead and get the Library Science Degree".

I think everyone, as a passive user, knows a bit of how to use the tools. But what if this class expects you to think not only as an active user, but as a mover and shaker for this social media, what if it expects you to think critically, analytically, and anthropologically how social media may shape or have shaped the way we think, our social behavior, our communication patterns, etc. This is what I am aiming to achieve.. with the help of everyone in the class.

Well that is my expectation of this course. To understand multiple social media tools in depth, so that we as librarians can reach our communities more effectively. I personally think social media has already changed our social behavior, especially for younger generations. Access to social media is everywhere due to the invention of smart phones and wireless internet connections. . . . I always enjoy a good challenge or puzzle that will get me thinking critically so, i look forward to the challenge of this course.
